5 Spice Beef Rice and Sautéed Broccoli

This ground beef dinner recipe will make quite an impression on your friends and family.  It is very versatile that you can replace it with other ground meat.  The Chinese 5 Spice powder gave a very unique fragrance and taste.  Nobody will believe that this dish is so easy.

CHEF NOTES

This ground beef dinner recipe will require 2 big pots on the stove top working at the same time.  Do have a peace of mind that you only switch your attention from one pot to another because you are waiting for something to happen.  It is totally manageable.

I love the combination of the 5 spice and beef.  You can definitely replace it with ground chicken or turkey.  I tried to use either one of them before.  It may need a little more oil if you use any poultry.

Using freshly cooked rice will make this dish mushy.  You can feel the big difference of the texture.  Therefore, stick with overnight cooked rice.

Another great tip is to double the quantity of steamed rice.  Half of it used in this recipe.  Save the other half for other fried rice recipes.

Ground Beef Dinner Recipe Ingredients and Directions

Ingredients
2 lbs (907g) 85% Lean Ground Beef
4 Cups (546g) Cooked Rice (must be completely cool overnight)
2 - 2½ lbs (.9-1.1kg) Broccoli Crowns (cut into florets)
1tablespoon Minced Garlic 

Seasonings

1 tablespoon Chinese 5 Spice Powder
2 teaspoon Salt (divided)
½ Cups (118g) of Water (divided)
4 tablespoon Canola or Vegetable Oil (divided)

Directions

  1. Preheat a big, deep skillet or Dutch oven at medium high heat
  2. Add beef and use a spatula to break it up
  3. Brown meat about 8-10 minutes
  4. Meanwhile, have another big, deep skillet or Dutch ready and follow the instructions of Simply Sauteed Broccoli to cook the vegetables
  5. Back to the first skillet, after the meat is brown, add 5 spice powder, rice, ¼ cup (34g) of water and 1½ teaspoon of salt
  6. Stir to combine and use the spatula to break down the rice
  7. You may occasionally drizzle some more oil if the rice starts sticking to the bottom of the pan.  Add 1 tablespoon of oil at a time.  It may need more or less than what this recipe calls for, depending on your pan.
  8. Stir regularly until the rice is totally mixed well with all the ingredients, about 10-15 minutes
  9. While waiting, transfer the broccoli on a serving plate by placing the florets on the edge of the plate, just like the picture shows (It is not only for presentation, but also for the broccoli to absorb the 5 spice flavor)
  10. Transfer rice on top and serve immediately
