Uses of Baking Soda in Cooking

Hi! Friends,

Time flies. We are in the second month of 2024 already. Many of you, including myself, may have new year resolutions. Hope everything goes well. If you stumbled, don’t quit. Just get back to the routine you started in the new year. Believe me, it will pay off as long as you stick to the promises you made to yourself.

This month, we are going to catch up something from the holiday "leftover" and utilize it in our daily lives. I am sure you will enjoy the tips and the use of it.

Before we go, I wish you Happy Valentine's Day and Happy Chinese New Year!

Tip/Idea

Power of Baking Soda

You most likely still have some baking soda left from the holiday baking season. Other than having it sitting at the back of the fridge or a corner of your room, this is one of the best ways to take the advantage of this ingredient.

Here are 2 common ways I use it:

1) When food was burnt and stuck on any cookware, soak it in warm soapy water and add about 1 tsp of baking soda. Walk away for 5-10 minutes (depending how tough the food is stuck on the cookware or bakeware). When you come back, everything will loosen up and easily scrape off.

2) Certain food is very heavy and powerful of its fragrance. However, you don’t want to bring that same smell into another dish if you are going to use the same cookware. Add a teaspoon of baking soda into the warm soapy water and wipe it around the pan with a sponge. The smell will be gone immediately. Rinse off everything and the cookware is as good as new.

If it’s cast iron cookware, skip the dish detergent. Warm water with baking soda work very well together, too.

These are just some great ways to use this economic ingredient. I am sure you will find plenty more tips of the usage of it online.

What Does Chinese Call Baking Soda?

The first 2 words above, in fact, represent the word "soda" and the pronounciation is very similar to the English word. The last word means powder.

One of the most common ways of using baking soda in Chinese cuisine is to tenderize the meat.
