Tip/Idea

Planning is A Must

Regardless if you like to do online or in-store shopping, using the flyers and your local store app is one great advantage. Why? You have a plan what you are going to buy instead of buying something that you don’t need. Besides, it’s the easiest and most efficient way to compare prices.

Stores nowadays always have a catch. Here are a few of my personal experiences that you want to be cautious about:

1) To get the sales price for the meat, you must purchase the minimum quantity. Otherwise, the per pound price will be different. I ran into different scenarios when it comes to this. The price difference ranged from $0.30 - $1/pound more. Your phone has a calculator. If there is any doubt, do a quick calculation to see the price difference. Sometimes, it can be very significant. If so, walk away.

2) “Buy 2 for $5”. Make sure you buy 2. In the past, many local stores would honor the discount price even if you bought 1 unit. But they don’t do so for all items and at all times anymore. The inconsistency of their policy set up a trap for you to pay a higher price. So, make sure to check your receipt. If there is any doubt, always ask the question before stepping out of the store.

3) From this month onwards till New Year, it is the period of getting your food on discounted price. Certain pantry items have the best price this time of the year and the shelf life lasts for the next 6 months. Check out what you always buy to fill up your pantry. Get those items when it’s on sale will save you a tons of money in the long run. My personal favorites are frozen and canned vegetables.

Is There Any Difference of Chinese Buying Grocery?

This is a Cantonese way to say “buying grocery”. The first word means "buy". The second word means "side dishes". You may wonder why "side dishes". A typical Chinese meal has plenty of dishes in front of them which are served along with rice. Unlike the western definition, "side dishes" refer to vegetables, meat, seafood and so forth.

The Mandarin way to say it is very similar. The only difference is the second word used in the phrase.
