Having More Fun in Chinese New Year even You’re Not Chinese

Hi!,

恭喜發財!

This is the first greeting every Chinese would say to each other during Chinese New Year (aka Spring Festival). In Cantonese, it is pronounced as “Kung Hei Fat Choi”. Mandarin is "Gong Xi Fa Cai".

January 29, 2025 is the first day of Chinese New Year. It is the year of snake. It starts on different date every year. It becomes a festival around the world that many people start to celebrate even they are not Chinese.

With my American husband and my mixed heritage son, we do celebrate this special festival in our own way. Stay tuned to learn some fun cultures that you can adopt.

Before you go, Happy Chinese New Year!

Tip/Idea

New Year, New You

January is mostly the time when we all set our new year resolution. Many of us, including myself, put down losing weight as one of the goals.

The most important tip is no matter what goal(s) you set for yourself this year. Understand that we all stumble and fall. No matter what happens, NEVER GIVE UP.

Fun Culture

Chinese New Year Fundamentals

You most probably knew it already because every time when you step into a Chinese restaurant, the main color theme is red. It’s a good luck color. Never put white on during any special Chinese festival. So, for Chinese new year, buy something red for your new clothes and new PJ.

My family tradition with my kid is to make sure that he puts on new red PJ the night before Chinese New Year. Just before going to bed, we will give him two red pocket money with best wishes of great academic year and good health. Then, my son will put them under his pillow just like my parents asked us to do to sleep it overnight. This gesture symbolizes the wishes to come true. Then, the children will be allowed to open the red pockets on New Year day and use the money.

On the 7th day of Chinese New Year, it is called "Yan Yat", everybody's birthday. My mom's tradition is to buy every one in the household a new pair of pants. Pants can be shorts, PJ pants, underpants, dress pants as long as they look like a pair of pants. It is because "pants" is pronounced as "fu" in Chinese. It means wealthy. So, I make sure that I do as such on that day every year.

With all that said, you can simply do what I just described to you. It's a lot of fun and carry on as a family tradition.

2-in-1 Coffee Machine

Coffee lovers, if you have been stopping by to buy coffee at least once a week, you may want to consider to buy an actual coffee machine which will make a cup just like your barista makes, except you want to see him/her more often. This will be a great investment for you to save a ton of money in the long run.

Think about it, a cup of coffee ranges from USD3.5-5 each. You stop by to get 2 cups a week. So, you spend average USD7-10 a week. Multiply that amount with 52 weeks a year, you spent up to $520 a year. You can easily buy 2-3 coffee machines like this which can make a cup of "joe" just like the way you want it at home with very little maintenance from your side.

My hubby used to be that person and he got one at home. He is so happy that he doesn't worry about the quality of the coffee being different every time from his favorite coffee shop. He has a full control of his cup of java. Besides, he saves plenty of money.
