Tip/Idea

The Easiest Way to Cut A Bell Pepper Making Zero Mess

Bell peppers are one of those fresh vegetables that you can find in the stores and farm stands during this time of the year with a super low price.

Not sure if you have realized that there are plenty of colors when it comes to this vegetable. It is no longer limited to green, red, yellow and orange. I saw purple, black and heirloom.

I watched an online video and learned a great way of cutting the bell peppers without getting the seeds all over the inside of its flesh. I must say that it’s a genius idea. And I made a few more improvements and made this ingredient more attractive in so many ways.

First, I must emphasize that the indentations of each pepper is different. This is a very important fact that we need to pay attention to before cutting a bell pepper. Some have only 2 indentations. Some have 5-6 of them. Their indentations can be straight or curvy. No matter what, you MUST cut along and follow the pattern of cutting each indentation to cut them all.

So, here are the steps:

1) Turn the pepper upside down. Yes, the stem is facing down and the bottom of the pepper is facing up. In short, you will start cutting from its bottom towards the stem.

2) The pepper should have at least 2 indentations for you to cut through. Once you start the cutting process from the bottom of the pepper, your knife should feel the hollow of the inside of the vegetables. Continue to move along and when your knife touches the core, stop. Repeat this same step to cut the rest of the indentations.

3) Use your non-dominating hand holds the pepper and stabilizes it. Use the dominating hand holds one “cut up” piece. Your fingers will gently push (thumb pushing down and the rest of the fingers pushing up).

4) Then, a piece of pepper will break apart from the stem and the seeds. You should have seen that there is no mess from the seeds on that piece of pepper. Repeat this step for the rest of the pepper until the core with seeds is completely detached from its flesh. Discard the core. (Gardeners, I am sure you know what to do with the seeds.)

5) Have a sharp knife to cut around each piece of pepper slices to get rid of the membranes and discard.

6) There you go. Serve it immediately or cut up the way your recipe is calling for.

What's Pepper Called in Chinese?

This is the Chinese word representing "pepper". Cantonese pronunciation is “jil”.

There are many ingredients and spices with the word pepper. For Chinese, regardless what it is, ingredients with the word “pepper” will always end up with this Chinese word. Since we talk a lot about bell peppers this month, Chinese will use the "color" word to indicate the difference, such as green pepper, black pepper and so forth.

So, for bell peppers, this Chinese word would pair it with its color word in Chinese.

Let's wrap up this month with this Bible verse.

"Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." ~ Matthew 6:31-33
